First and foremost is convenience. I like being able to practice anytime I choose. I do not like loading my clubs and other practice equipment into the car wasting time driving to a practice facility only to find that I have to wait because the practice area is full.
Something else that is inconvenient and annoying are the distractions caused by other golfers using the facility. I am sure that if you have spent much time at the practice range this has happened to you. A group of other people on the range are sharing a space and making a game of it talking loudly about their shots and their plans for the weekend or trying to hit golf balls like Happy Gilmore, which really is funny, but not to me when I am trying to correct a glitch in my swing.
I admit it doesn't happen often. But I prefer to avoid these possibilities by being at my own home without the inconvenience or the possibility of distraction. I purchased a net that can be set up indoors or out so I can practice when it is cold and raining, or in the air conditioning if it's hundred degrees out.
Secondly I like practicing with the type of golf balls I use to play with. Let's face it in most cases range balls are cheap inferior golf balls that are hard as rock. Many are cracked or split and some are limited flight balls. How can you effectively learn to judge distances and accuracy using balls like that? I don't think you can.
The cost of using a practice facility is another reason I like having my own golf driving net. four or five dollars for 30 or forty golf balls adds up. For me that is more than five dollars an hour. I am very serious about improving my game so I practice every day if I can. Being able to practice as much as I want for free is a much better choice.
